As of December 31, 2016, the company owned 152 primarily private pay senior housing properties in 37 states in the United States, making it one of the largest publicly-traded owners of retirement homes.
The company is externally managed by an affiliate of Fortress Investment Group.

On November 6, 2014, Newcastle Investment Corp. completed the corporate spin-off of New Senior Investment Group.
In December 2014, the company agreed to acquire a 17-property portfolio for $435 million.
On August 12, 2015, the company acquired of 28 private pay, independent living properties from affiliates of Holiday Retirement for $640 million. The company financed the purchase in part with a $464.7 million loan originated by Walker & Dunlop.
In August 2017, the company sold 2 properties.
In October 2017, the company sold 15 properties for $296 million.
